  • Product Bites: Vegetable Sacks for storing your root veg

    What is/are Vegetable Sacks:

storing_vegetables_potatoes_in_jute_sackVegetable Sacks are veg storage bags made from 100% biodegradable vegetable fibres.  They are indispensable to keep home grown veg in peak condition until you are ready to eat it.

The tough, woven fabric makes the best possible storage material for root vegetables.  It allows air to circulate so condensation doesn't build up inside. Vegetables are kept cool, dark and dry.

    What crop are they for:

Ideal for all root vegetables - especially potatoes, carrots, parsnips, turnips, swedes and beetroot. You can also store onions (in a separate bag to the other veg)

    Where can I use them:

Keep them in a cupboard or hang the bags somewhere cool dark and dry if possible to allow air to circulate.  The shed or garage would be perfect provided it is relatively pest free.  Check every now and then to make sure that there are no issues.  Remove and use any veg that are not looking their best straight away.

    What's so special about it?

The natural fabric allows air to circulate meaning that the crop isn't ruined by condensation.  They are also reusable year after year and compostable once you have eventually finished with them.

  • Product Bite: Vigoroot Potato/Tomato Planters

    What are Vigoroot Potato/Tomato Planters:

Vigoroot_potato/Tomato_planterVigoroot Potato/ Tomato Planters are air-pruning planters that offer a super easy way to grow bigger plants such as potatoes and tomatoes.

    What crop are they for:

They are mainly used for potatoes and tomatoes but could any root veg  such as carrots or parsnips where the added depth will allow them to thrive.  You could even grow fruit trees such as damsons in them.

They take 40 Litres of compost and will take 3 seed potatoes or two large tomato plants.

    Where can I use them:

Use anywhere in the garden, patio, balcony or terrace.  They are 35cm in daimeter so you only need a tiny space to get growing.

    What's so special about it?

    Pink_potato_flower Potato flower

The Vigoroot fabric is what makes them special.  The magic of this fabric comes from its ability to ‘air-prune’ the roots of plants, dramatically changing their formation and their ability to sustain the plant in a limited volume of compost. It encourages more vigorous rooting, which enables the plants to absorb more nutrients. It prevents the roots from growing too long, and helps prevent plants from becoming ‘pot-bound’ which would normally limit the plants’ growth. This means that the plants can grow to a much larger size in a relatively small pot.

The super strong root system also helps the plants to become more resistant to harsh weather, pests and diseases. Used for many years by commercial growers, the benefits of air-pruning technology are well recognised by the trade.

They also take all the hard work out of growing potatoes.  There is no digging to prepare the bed and come harvest time you simply tip the planter over and pull out the potatoes.

  • Product Bite: Bamboo Plant Markers

    What are Bamboo Plant Markers:

new_rpoduct_2019_bamboo_plant_markerHow do you mark a vegetable garden?  Bamboo Plant Markers are a set of three labels that will allow you to mark what you have planted where.

It is easy to mix up seeds once planted and be left guessing as to how to care for your emerging plants.  These Markers take away the worry when using seed trays, planting in rows or even placing specimen plants.  They have a life span of around 3+ years and are biodegradable and fully home compostable after use.

    What's so special about it?

The material we make the markers from is its real selling point.   Is bamboo a good material?  Yes it is!  It is the fastest-growing woody plant in the world. It can grow up to four feet in one day and to do so it needs no pesticides and little water compared to other crops.  Our markers are made from sustainable bamboo with natural resin made from rice.  This material is free from petroleum-based plastics and BPA and a great way to help reduce plastic in the garden.

How do i lable my plants?

If you are already using plastic plant markers then keep using them until they wears out (or get lost!).   However, if you have muddled up your seeds this year and are womdering 'what can i use for plant markers?' then these are the best choice.

    Find out more:

See it in action: The markers don't have their own video yet but they are made from the same material as our bamboo pots and seed trays.  You can find out more about it including how to dispose of it after use over on our YouTube channel Bamboo Range

  • Product Bite: Tomato Tubes

    What are Tomato Tubes :

tomato_tubes_on_tomato_plant_in_potTomato Tubes are simple tubes of aerated, UV Stabilised polythene that you put over tomato plants.  They offer simple, inexpensive, organic crop protection for tomato plants grown outside.

    What crop are they for:

Tomatoes that are grown outside a greenhouse.

    What's so special about it?

The special thing about them is that they are, like so many brilliant ideas, extremely simple.  Tomato plants thrive when they are warm.  Unseasonal weather can cause havoc with outdoor tomato crops. Too much rain, too little sunshine, harsh winds, plummeting temperatures...the great British summer is not always ideal for a bumper crop of tomatoes! Even this week we are set to swing between 11 and 37 degrees!

However, if you just pop over a length of Tomato Tube it will protect the plant from dipping temperatures as well as fruit pinching pests. it is easy to take off for the day if conditions change  for example on a super hot day and then pop it back on to retain that warmth.  The holes in the polythene will allow air to circulate around the plant giving the plant the ideal environment to boost ripening.  Great for late season toms.

Tomato Tube comes as a 3pk of 2m lengths. Once over support the plant in the pot with canes and tie off at the top and bottom with the tie wires included in the pack.

  • Product Bite: Bamboo Scoop

    What is the Bamboo Scoop:

new-product-2019-bamboo-scoopThe Bamboo Scoop is a generously proportioned tool for quickly filling pots, planters and seed trays.

It is brilliant for planting seeds, potting on and even repotting.  It has a life span of 3 to 5 years and is biodegradable and fully home compostable after use.

    What's so special about it?

The material we make the scoop from is its real selling point.   It is strong, sustainable bamboo with natural resin made from rice.  This material is free from petroleum-based plastics and BPA and a great way to help reduce plastic in the garden.

Another great reason to use one of these is filling pots can be a very messy operation with it spilling off the trowel.  Holding 600ml at a time this wonderful sage green compost scoop will make the process simpler and far less messy.

If you have a plastic scoop in your current kit then keep it until it wears out.   However, if you are muddling by using a trowel or need to replace your plastic scoop though - this is the best choice.

  • Product Bite: Bamboo Seed Tray

    What is/are :

It is a seed tray made out of sustainable bamboo fibre, rice starch and resin made from naturally occurring organic compounds. This material is free from petroleum-based plastics and BPA.

Bamboos are some of the fastest-growing plants in the world.  Some species can grow 91cm in a 24-hour period, a rate of almost 4 cm an hour.  This makes the core material truly sustainable.

They can be used year after year so they are a great alternative to single use trays.

    What crop are they for:

Sow anything you would have sown in a plastic seed tray into a Bamboo Seed Tray.

    Where can I use them:

Seed_TrayThese soft colours and the finish on pots will look just as good with herbs on a kitchen windowsill as in the greenhouse.

They come without holes for indoor use where you don't want them to drip.  However it is easy to add holes for drainage.  Simply punch out where marked with a screwdriver or tip of a trowel.

    What's so special about it?

Whilst you can find some biodegradable pots for sale, at the time of writing this is the only biodegradable seed tray on the market.

It’s estimated that 500 million plastic plant pots are sold every year. The majority end up in landfill or are incinerated.  Very little is recycled and there are few facilities to do so. A large amount of fossil fuel is used in the production of plastic pots, and they take around 500 years to decompose.

The difference with the Bamboo Seed Tray is that you can dispose of them on your home compost heap.  Composting may take 6-12 months. Breaking the products into small pieces before adding them to your compost heap will help speed up this process.

  • Product Bite: Easy Path

    What is Easy Path :

    EasyPath PE Wheelbarrow

Easy Path is an instant fold-out garden pathway for placing between rows of vegetables, herbs, flowers or strawberries so that you can work between the crops without damaging the soil or weilding planks of wood.

    What crop is it for:

Anything that you plant in a veg bed as well as flowers borders - its great for getting to the back of beds without leaning and stretching.  Much kinder on your back than trying to manage without.

    Where can I use it:

Easy_Path_PotatoesUse it anywhere where you have soil that you don't want to tread on and compact.  In healthy soil half of the volume should be made up of solid material.  The remainder should be either water or air.  If the soil becomes compacted then it harder for the roots of plants to penetrate the soil.  There is also no space for the water and air that are needed for excahnge of gases a healthy ecosystem of soil microbes.

    What's so special about it?

It is portable and lightweight and stores easily.  A plank of wood could do a similar job.  However, the Easy Path is much easier to move and can used in places where you wouldn't want to put a plank of wood.  It can be laid down and left but it can also be rolled out, used and then foded away.  For example it can be simply laid down in a flower border while weed, then packed away.  Much easier than carting a plant of wood round.

  • Product Bites: Deep Rootrainers

    What are Deep Rootrainers :

Rootrainers are innovative planting cells.  They are the perfect start for nearly all plants and especially those that are sensitive to disturbance and require deep root runs.

Ideal for seeds, seedlings, plugs and cuttings, they require less compost than ordinary pots.

There are 32 cells which come in openable 'books' so that the seedlings can be planted on without disturbing the roots.  The cells fit snuggly into a tray and there is a clear plastic lid that can be used as a drip tray to water and then flipped over to turn the set up into a mini propegator.

    What crop are they for:

deep_rootrianers_with_beansDeep Rootrainers are perfect for plants that have deep roots like beans, peas, pumpkins, tomatoes and sweet peas.  They are the most common ones used by veg growers.

Rapid Rootrainers and Compact Rapid Rootrainers are also available for bedding plants, salads and herbs.  And Maxi Rootrainers are the biggest in the range, used for growing broad leaved trees.

    Where can I use them:

They are great for the greenhouse, a window cill or with the lid on they can act as a mini-greenhouse if you want to use them outside.

    What's so special about them?

    Rootrainers_diagram_showing_root_formation

Strong straight roots are a fundamental requirement of healthy and successful growth.

The rectangular shape provides a greater surface area and the grooves allow more roots to develop on the outside of the plug. Plants are also easily extracted from the ‘open books’ without root disturbance providing the perfect plug plants.

Rootrainers are well known and well loved by horticulturalists, commercial growers and all the best gardeners.

  • Product Bites: Water Saucers

    What are Water Saucers:

water_saucer Water Saucers are a simple self-watering system for potted plants.  The Saucer sits under any plant pot.  The plant roots draw up the water they need via the super absorbent capillary wick.

    What crop are they for:

They work for any plant in a pot.  Anything from geraniums to runner beans can benefit.

They are perfect for pairing with Vigoroot pots and great for watering when away for a few days

    Where can I use them:

Before planting up a pot, simply thread the capillary wick half way up the pot (if the pot has no drainage holes you will need to cut or drill a small hole in the base of your pot).  If you already have a plant in a pot you can retro fit the wick - see the YouTube video for how to do this.

    What's so special about it?

The plant can get water as and when it needs it.  The wick sits in the water-filled saucer enabling the plant to independently draw up water as required. You can also add liquid feed to the water supply and the plant can self-feed too! Over and under-watering will no longer be a problem as plants will be provided with a consistent water supply. The large capacity of the water saucers will mean that  plants can be left to look after themselves for extended periods too.

Water saucers are perfect for pairing with Haxnicks Vigoroot™ pots and mean that much less room is needed to grow veg for example crops such as runner beans can be grown in pots as small as 5 litres.
